Dates have been set for the new play A Boy and His Soul, written by and starring Broadway alum Colman Domingo. Directed by Tony Kelly, the production begins previews at off-Broadway’s Vineyard Theatre on September 9 with opening set for September 24.
Domingo describes his A Boy and His Soul as a “whirlwind trip via the phenomenal soul collection of a young, black, inner-city gay boy and his complex family.” The show reflects on family situations inspired by soul music, and vice-versa, dealing with themes like loss, the celebration of life and soul searching with the help of music.
Domingo appeared last season on Broadway in the Tony Award-nominated Passing Strange, and can be seen in Spike Lee’s feature film of the stage show. Additional Broadway credits include Well. Regionally, he has appeared in Coming Home (Long Wharf Theatre), the world premiere of A Boy and His Soul (Thick House) and The People’s Temple (Berkeley Repertory Theatre). As a director, he has helmed the off-Broadway productions Exit Cuckoo and Single Black Female.
Kelly reprises his role as director for A Boy and His Soul after helming the show’s world premiere at San Francisco’s Thick House. A Boy and His Soul features choreography by Ken Roberson, sets by Rachel Hauck, costumes by Toni-Leslie James, lighting design by Marcus Doshi and sound by Tom Morse.
